Since October 2024, Amsterdam has been celebrating 750 years of officially being a city. It all started in 1275 when Amsterdam transformed from a small fishing village to a bustling trading hub.

The anniversary celebrations are packed with exciting events, including neighborhood festivals, the closure of the A10 ring road, and a grand parade of tall ships. The festivities will reach their peak on the actual anniversary — October 27, 2025.

June 21, 2025 was a major highlight of Amsterdam’s year-long 750th birthday celebrations. In an historical one-off event, the city closed 15 kilometers of the Ring highway (the A10) to cars.

The pedestrian-only extravaganza featured music, sports, theater, dance and games (including an impressive number of tables with speed chess), spread over three zones on and around the Ring. Twenty couples even got married on the Ring, with one ceremony officiated by the Mayor of Amsterdam.

Musical highlights along the highway included the soulful songs of Amsterdam-based singer songwriter Lorren, Brotherhood a brass band bursting with vibrant energy and the brass ensemble from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, founded in 1888.

And, under the bridge, non-stop, back-to-back DJ sets from the top names in Dutch electronic music like Mas Amor, created an all-day rave. Right beside the rave, women were competitive weightlifting and further up the highway, was a forest of 750 large trees and 7500 small ones: replanted in and around the city after the Ring event.

His beautiful meditative modern dance meets Japanese butoh piece, Welcome to Asbestos Hall, was inspired by Tatsumi Hijikata’s original Asbestos Studio, a 1960s Tokyo experimental arts space.

The climb upwards starts in the 17th century stairwell of De Nieuwe Kerk and continues up the temporary scaffolding. The “Roof of the City” is open daily until November 2, 2025 at a cost of €15.00 or free to visit with a Museum Pass.

For another brilliant terrace experience, the Renzo Piano designed Nemo Science Museum has a new open green, sustainable rooftop open to the public that doesn’t require entrance to the museum. Themed sailings, particularly popular among Americans, are a highlight. Gray Faust mentions the line’s new “Cultivated Journeys” initiative, which offers themed cruises like wine and cheese, culinary arts, music, literature, fashion, and art history.

On these trips, guest lecturers, experts, and performers interact with passengers, providing unique experiences. Daily events may include guided shore excursions, wine tastings, educational talks, and musical performances.

Recent special guests have included veteran NBC News journalist Kerry Sanders, Miami’s Chèvre restaurant and cheese shop owner Mario Naar and its Chef Claudio Giordano, German sommelier Nils Lackner, Miami Book Fair International founder Mitchell Kaplan and recording artist Travis Moser.

Special Chef’s Table dinners occur on every cruise, some in partnership with culinary leaders like Michelin star chef Michael Collantes.

The chef’s dinner is a formal, multi-course dinner that often uses ingredients picked up in that day’s local port.

Part of this themed cruise portfolio has also included a first-ever President’s Cruise, hosted by Reyes and Smith. Sailing last month, it departed from Reyes’ home port of Monte Carlo and circumnavigated Corsica and Sardinia, two islands she particularly enjoys. It was a dedicated wine and cheese trip with daily activities like onshore tours to local wine and cheese venues, onboard tastings with cheese pairings, a special chef’s dinner and the option for guests to interact with all three throughout the trip.

This is possible because of the small nature of its sailboats, the largest of which only holds 136 passengers. Unlike larger ships, Sea Cloud’s ships can sail into ports that are off limits to others. The newest and largest in the fleet, Sea Cloud Spirit will home port in Venice this summer, providing passengers stunning views of the Grand Lagoon as it sails to a special dock near St. Mark’s Square. It is also a dramatic scene for those on land watching these old-fashioned sailboats glide past.

Mario Naar, the owner of Chèvre Miami, recently embarked on a memorable shopping trip for local cheese in Corsica during the Sea Cloud President’s Cruise. Over several days, he served fresh, high-quality cheese to passengers, including preparing panini on one afternoon.

A low passenger count on the ship made it easier for the chefs to take special trips into town, allowing them to purchase enough cheese to serve everyone on board. The chefs even fished directly from the ship and grilled their fresh catches at lunchtime barbecues on deck.
