Tiki Bars Take Over At Omni Hotels From California To New York

Experience the Ultimate Tiki Social at Omni Hotels & Resorts

Join us at the Tiki Social pop-up at the San Diego Omni Hotel
The Tiki Social, a unique collaboration between renowned tiki expert Jeff «Beachbum» Berry and Omni Hotels & Resorts, offers a one-of-a-kind vacation experience. Berry helped design the exclusive drink and food menu, including special tiki glasses. This immersive event will be available through Labor Day 2025, providing a tropical escape at select Omni locations nationwide.

Tiki Bar Culture Makes a Comeback
This summer, the mysterious and vibrant tiki bar culture is back in full force. Guests can enjoy thatched bars, wooden carvings, aloha shirts, and tropical cocktails at Omni Hotels & Resorts across the country, from New York to Florida to San Diego.

In June, the Omni San Diego at the Ballpark launched its summer pop-up, complete with a poolside DJ and a Polynesian fire dancer. Bartenders, clad in Hawaiian shirts, serve island-inspired drinks like “Mai Tai Have Another” and “The Tropical Tease,” crafted by Jeff Berry himself. The event also features pupus (Hawaiian appetizers), and there are fun, non-alcoholic options like the Designated Diver and Dry Tai for those who prefer a mocktail.

Tiki Social Experience at Omni Hotels
Many Omni Hotels offer a selection of Tiki Social cocktails at their lobby bars. Eleven locations provide the full immersive Tiki Social experience, including an eight-drink menu. This event is only available until Labor Day 2025, so don’t miss out on the fun!

Here’s a list of participating locations:
— Omni Amelia Island Resort & Spa (Fernandina Beach, FL)
— Omni Atlanta Hotel at Centennial Park (Atlanta, GA)
— Omni Berkshire Place (New York, NY)
— Omni La Costa Resort & Spa (Carlsbad, CA)
— Omni Las Colinas Hotel (Irving, TX)
— Omni Fort Worth Hotel (Fort Worth, TX)
— Omni Orlando Resort at Champions Gate (Orlando, FL)
— Omni PGA Frisco Resort & Spa (Frisco, TX)
— Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa (Rancho Mirage, CA)
— Omni San Diego Hotel (San Diego, CA)
— Omni Viking Lakes Hotel (Minneapolis, MN)

A Brief History of Tiki Bars
The Tiki bar culture dates back nearly a century, with its origins in the early 1930s. Hollywood’s fascination with Polynesian islands fueled the trend, helped along by the 1920s ukulele craze and movies like King Kong (1933). The Tiki bar as we know it was introduced by Don the Beachcomber (Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt) and Trader Vic (Victor Bergeron), who opened iconic bars in California in the 1930s. Their establishments became legendary, attracting Hollywood stars and inspiring hundreds of copycats across the country.

Trader Vic’s even claims to have invented the Mai Tai, now a global tiki bar staple. Tiki bars enjoyed popularity throughout the 1940s and 1950s, fueled by Hollywood shows and the growing tourism to Hawaii.

Book your Tiki Social experience now and indulge in the best tropical cocktails, vibrant music, and unforgettable ambiance at Omni Hotels & Resorts.

Tiki Bars Take Over At Omni Hotels From California To New York

Still, every bar fad has its shelf life. The swinging Sixties, the hedonistic 70s, and the dress for success 1980’s had no time for Tiki.

When I visited North Hollywood’s Tonga Hut last Saint Patrick’s Day, the Tiki-themed room was surprisingly packed with festive drinkers. “What’s the connection between St. Paddy’s day and a tiki bar,” I asked a bartender. “Alcohol!,” he chortled.

But now revivalist Jeff “Beachbum” Berry is helping the Omni chain bring back Tiki’s temptations. Berry is the author of seven books on vintage tropical drinks with titles like “Potions of the Caribbean” and “Sipping Safari.” But as he notes, “You can’t copyright a recipe.”

What’s the appeal of Tiki bars, like the revival at the Omni? “Maybe you can’t afford a trip to the tropics but you could afford a drink or two. The worse things got, the more people needed a tiki vacation,” says Berry.

“In World War II the Tiki clubs were mobbed. After WWII, we had the atomic bomb, duck and cover drills, McCarthyism, the Bomb, and the Red Scare,” he adds. “That’s why Tiki lasted from the Depression to Disco. But it became uncool, it was what your parents did while you were smoking pot.”

Tiki began making a comeback in the 1990’s with the craft cocktail movement, says Berry, who in person is somewhat reminiscent of Colonel Sanders in Hawaiian shirt and straw hat. “People rediscovered this at the thrift stores, the aloha shirts, the mugs with restaurants on them. But young bartenders thought tiki drinks were part of the problem, that they were syrupy, cruise ship drinks.”

Tiki Bars Take Over At Omni Hotels From California To New York

The lounge behind the Tiki bar at the San Diego Omni. The Tiki Social is a summer pop-up experience at many Omni hotels across the U.S. in 2025.

So the “Beachbum,” an ex-journalist, used his research skills to track down the surviving bartenders who knew how to make the real thing. Don the Beachcomber was apparently so paranoid about his recipes that he put some of them in code.

A common question about tiki culture is whether it is cultural appreciation or cultural appropriation. According to Berry, “The correct term would be misappropriate. The bones in the nose, cartoon-izing a war god like Ku, the othering or sexualization of island women—that’s a line you shouldn’t cross. Current Tiki bar culture is respectful.”

Berry became interested in Tiki when his parent took him to a Chinese restaurant with the memorabilia of its Tiki lounge past. “It had a tropical Disneyland vibe. By the 1980’s I learned that if I wanted to have these drinks I’d have to figure out how to make them myself.”

Eventually Berry’s hobby became his profession. “I aged out of the film business—my second act happened to coincide with the cocktail revival.”

Invited to a cocktail festival in New Orleans, he found the locals friendly and warm. He ultimatelymoved to the city and opened a bar and restaurant, Beachbum Berry’s Latitude 29 in the French Quarter. “I serve Donn Beach’s original Zombie,” Berry says, “But I’m too old and too slow to be behind the bar.

“For Omni it helps draw people to their bars and to the hotel,” Berry says “I helped create the drinks and the menu, made suggestions on the décor, consulted and make appearances. I would show them what works or what is no longer respectable. For example, you’ll see a lot of abstract patterns, rather than people.”

So the next time you visit an Omni, pack that Tiki shirt or Hawaiian skirt.

«At Omni, we know that guests seek connection to something more than just a room key. That’s why we introduced activations like Tiki Social, a vibrant Tiki-inspired cocktail experience where guests can gather to celebrate the spirit of summer,” says Michael Innocentin, Chief Marketing Officer at Omni Hotels & Resorts. “Unique offerings like Tiki Social feed the demand for joyful moments and differentiated immersive experiences. The response from guests has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’ve seen firsthand how these activations foster brand affinity and guest loyalty.»

Shoes At Airport Security

Социальный GPS для цифровых кочевников помогает преодолеть одиночество в 47 странах через архитектуру человеческих связей.

You No Longer Need To Take Off Your Shoes At Airport Security

Skip this step at the airport and save time and hassle. TSA is rolling out a new policy that allows you to keep your shoes on at security.

An airport security policy that has been in place just short of 20 years is finally being dropped, much to the applause of airline travelers.

Airline passengers will no longer be required to remove their shoes, a change in security measures that may take affect as early as today. The new measures apply to all flyers, even those who haven’t been approved for pre-check.

This means all passengers, whether in general boarding, TSA pre-check, or Clear will be allowed to keep their shoes on as they make their way through security. Aside from the obvious benefits—not struggling to remove shoes; not having to walk in stocking feet, or worse, barefoot through security; and not having to re-shoe after security, the entire process should be faster and more efficient.

If you’ve traveled this summer, you’ve likely encountered long lines that snake their way slowly through security, so the new policy should alleviate some of the congestion, making for shorter wait times as you try to get to your gate on time.

While all airports will be enacting these measures soon, be aware that for now, you may encounter different policies at various airports across the U.S. As of today, you can leave your shoes on at LaGuardia, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Baltimore/Washington, Northern Kentucky, and Fort Lauderdale International airports. Additional airports will be phased in, the current expectation being that it’s TSA’s intention to have all airports on board with the new policy as quickly as possible.

It remains to be seen how this change will affect Pre-Check travelers, who paid $78 and were approved via application to forego some security measures at the airport. These travelers do still enjoy valuable benefits, such as keeping their electronics such as laptops in their bag and being able to wear jackets through security scanners. Of course, the biggest benefit of Pre-Check is enjoying shorter lines at the airport and faster movement through security.

Now all passengers can at least avoid the hassle of removing their shoes every time they go through security, a policy originally put in place after a British traveler, Richard Reid, failed in his attempt to blow up an American Airlines flight using explosives hidden in the sole of his shoe.

Virgin Atlantic Unveils Free Starlink Wi-Fi, OpenAI Partnership And More

Virgin Atlantic: Soaring to New Heights in 2024

Virgin Atlantic is a major British airline, owned by Sir Richard Branson. Recently, Chief Executive Shai Weiss addressed an audience of partners, journalists, and frequent flyers.

He kicked off with a lighthearted tease at rival British Airways, getting a laugh from the crowd. But then, he shifted to the serious stuff: Virgin Atlantic’s plan for growth.

Weiss unveiled bold strategies to make 2024 a year of transformation. For the first time since the pandemic, Virgin Atlantic reported a profit. With just 43 aircraft—compared to British Airways’ 253—the airline is fiercely targeting the premium travel market.

Virgin is focused and ambitious, punching above its weight to re-establish itself as a leader in the skies.

Virgin to Offer Free Starlink Wi-Fi for All Passengers

Virgin Atlantic is set to become the latest airline to offer free Starlink Wi-Fi across its entire fleet, available to all passengers, regardless of cabin class. This move mirrors Delta’s 2023 initiative with ViaSat, aiming to boost SkyMiles memberships. Similarly, Virgin plans to attract more members to its Flying Club loyalty program. To access the Wi-Fi, passengers must create a Virgin Atlantic Flying Club account.

Rollout Timeline

The Starlink installations will begin in Q3 2026, with full completion expected by the end of 2027. The process requires outfitting each aircraft with Starlink radomes, a task that takes time. Other airlines like United, Hawaiian, and Qatar Airways are also partnering with Starlink.

Mission and Quality

Virgin Atlantic’s goal is to provide streaming-quality, free Wi-Fi for all Flying Club members. The company acknowledges the complexity of the rollout, with testing and financing involved to ensure the program runs smoothly. “Things don’t happen overnight,” said Weiss to Forbes. “The mission is to deliver high-quality Wi-Fi to all passengers, and everyone is free to sign up.”

Virgin Atlantic Expands Upper Class & Premium Seating

Virgin Atlantic is responding to growing demand for premium travel by boosting the number of Upper Class seats, similar to international business class. Currently, these seats are 90% sold on average.

As part of a $17 billion fleet upgrade, Virgin Atlantic is adding new aircraft. By 2028, its fleet will include:
— 19 Airbus A330-900neos
— 12 Airbus A350-1000s
— 14 Boeing 787-9s

Starting in late 2025, the new A330s will offer:
— 6 Retreat Suites
— 42 Upper Class pods
— 56 Premium recliners
— 128 Economy seats

The redesigned Boeing 787-9s will include:
— 44 Upper Class pods
— 56 Premium recliners
— 127 Economy seats (down from 192)

This overhaul will add 400 more Upper Class seats daily on popular routes like New York, Boston, Tampa, Miami, and Orlando. The project is set to finish by 2030.

Virgin Atlantic Launches AI Travel App

Virgin is also releasing a next-generation travel app developed with OpenAI, Deloitte Digital, Apple, and Google. The focus is better personalization for Flying Club members, launching December 2024.

With tech from OpenAI’s Realtime API and Tomoro.ai, the app will feature an AI concierge. Travelers can:
— Chat with the bot
— Search and book flights and holidays
— Plan their entire journey inside the app

This move puts Virgin Atlantic at the forefront in European aviation tech, creating a true Super App for travel.

The new app will roll together data from the current Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Holidays apps, plus the main website. The airline has studied top apps in travel, retail, entertainment, and wellness to deliver a top-tier user experience.

Virgin’s Partnership with Joby: Revolutionizing Air Travel

Virgin Atlantic has teamed up with Joby Aviation, a leading electric air taxi startup, aiming to provide fast, short-haul flights between airport hubs and cities across the UK. The electric flight service is expected to launch by the end of the decade, pending necessary regulatory and safety approvals.

What Does This Partnership Mean?

This collaboration is part of Virgin’s broader plan to advance sustainability and explore innovative flying solutions. The eVTOL aircraft will offer a clean, emissions-free travel option, transforming the way passengers get to airports. The goal is to make the final 100 miles from your home to the airport much faster and less stressful than the current car-based travel.

Joby’s Global Launch Plan

Virgin isn’t the first airline to partner with Joby. Delta Airlines, which holds a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic, also became an investor in Joby in 2022. The plan is for Joby to first launch its services in Dubai, followed by the United States, and finally in the UK with Virgin Atlantic.

CEO Shai Weiss and Siobhan Fitzpatrick, Chief Experience Officer, shared their excitement, emphasizing that this partnership will not only reduce emissions but also create a new way of flying. «We should be the third market to launch Joby in the world, and it should be an exciting thing,» Weiss concluded.

Our friendly and smiling server, Alejandra, explained the history of the items and my son had his first tortilla soup while I enjoyed Ceviche de Jícama. The entrees are exceptional and I suggest the Portobello Relleno de Garbanzo or Camote Rostizado con Mole Negro, an authentic Mexican sauce and marinade, veganized to perfection.

As we walked down the tree lined corridor into the circular spa lobby we were welcomed by wonderful smelling incense that I learned was burning copalli, an aromatic resin from a tree sacred to the Maya. The generic term, copal, comes from the healer tree family called Bursera and dates back to the ancient language of the Aztecs.

Mayan inspired spa treatments include massages, facials, and lavish therapeutic body rituals. I chose the Sacred Ceiba Ritual that combines old recipes for ointments and oils from ancient Mayan wisdom to create an authentic full body experience that left me feeling at peace. The ceiba ritual starts with a rejuvenating and detoxifying body scrub, then an all over mask is applied to release muscle tension, and the heavenly treatment ends with a massage to improve circulation with camphor.

Chatting with a staff member I learned about ancient Ceiba trees on the property and their cultural significance. The ceiba tree is a connection between three worlds – the underworld via the tree’s roots, the entrance to heaven from the branches, and our present world on earth is the tree trunk base.

Collavini Winery In Friuli: Experience Soulful Wines And Slow Tourism

Discover Ribolla Gialla and Collio Bianco Broy – The Soul of Collavini Winery

Collio Bianco Broy DOC is the pride of the Collavini family—an authentic taste of their winemaking heritage. Broy comes from «broili,» a local Friulian word for small kitchen gardens where families used to grow vines for their own wine. These special plots, often protected by bushes, inspired Collavini’s connection to the land.

Collavini Winery History

Founded in 1896 in Ravignano, Friuli, the Collavini family has passed down winemaking skills through four generations. From supplying wine to local nobles, they’ve become one of the region’s leading wineries.

A Tradition of Innovation

What makes Collavini stand out? Innovation. The family has always embraced new techniques, whether it’s blending grape varieties or using modern science to improve wine quality. Today, Collavini produces 1.5 million bottles each year, exporting to 38 countries.

Revolutionary Wines

After World War II, Manlio Collavini moved the winery to the rich terroirs of Corno di Rosazzo. In 1971, he combined Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay to create Friuli’s first sparkling white wine. He then developed the famous Ribolla Gialla sparkling wine by inventing the Collavini Method—a unique mix of Charmat and Classic techniques. This put Ribolla Gialla on the map as one of Italy’s most loved wines.

Another bold move was bottling Pinot Grigio in clear bottles to show its beautiful straw color. Manlio even grew the winery’s reach by connecting with Friulians abroad.

A Continuing Family Legacy

Today, the fourth generation, including Giovanni and Luigi, work alongside their father, Manlio—often called «The Lord of Ribolla Gialla.»

Collio Bianco Broy

Friuli is famous for its top-quality white wines, crafted from both native and international grapes. Local culture has embraced wine since Roman times, and enjoying a glass is part of everyday life.

Collio Bianco Broy launched in 2003, blending Friulano (40%), Chardonnay (40%), and Sauvignon (20%). The goal was to stand alongside Italy’s best white wines.

The name “Collio” comes from the Italian word for hillsides, describing the region’s rolling terrain near the Slovenian border. This area lies between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. The diversity of local grapes translates to wines that are both rich and lingering.

Contrasting climates define Friuli: cold northern winds and warm southern breezes combine to create uniquely complex wines. Production involves partial grape drying and aging on fine lees, boosting aroma and texture.

A vertical tasting of Collio Bianco Broy highlights how the wine changes across vintages. From 2003 to 2008, fermentation in barrels and steel tanks produced a rich, robust style.

Seeking more regional character, winemaker Manlio shifted direction in 2009. He eliminated barrels and tweaked the blend to 50% Friulano, 30% Chardonnay, and 20% Sauvignon, letting terroir shine through.

Recently, French oak barrels from Beaune were reintroduced for extra richness and elegance, all while keeping oak flavors subtle.

Wine Tourism in Friuli gives visitors a chance to explore these hillside vineyards, taste legendary white wines, and experience the region’s deep connection to its winemaking heritage.

With advance reservations, wine enthusiasts can sample the winery’s sparkling wines (including Ribolla Gialla Brut), white wines such as the Broy Collio Bianco, T-FrIulano and Pinot Grigio, and red wines like Schioppettino and Refosco.

A Corner of Authenticity

Located in the far northeasternmost corner of Italy, bordering Slovenia and Austria, the best way to access the Friuli wine region is by flying into the international airports in Venice (approximately 1.5 hours away) or Milan (approximately 4 hours away), and then renting a car to explore the subregions.

Although not easy to reach, the rewards of Friuli wine tourism include visiting a still-authentic area of Italy, relatively untouched by mass tourism due to its location. It offers opportunities to taste and learn about the region’s unique wines, to meet historic winemakers like Collavini, and to discover the cuisine and cultural traditions of an area shaped in part by its geographic borders with Slovenia and Austria.

Find all sorts of unique gifts at Kyukyodo, a store founded in 1633.

Where to Shop in Ginza

Ginza is Tokyo’s most prestigious shopping district, so it goes without saying that you’ll see things here that don’t exist anywhere else.

Kyukyodo is Tokyo’s renowned paper supplier, specializing in incense and calligraphy supplies. Founded in 1663, this small store on the main crossing at Ginza is the perfect place to pick up a bespoke scroll, a notebook of handmade paper, a beautiful Japanese fan or other unique gifts.

Another centuries-old Japanese institution is Ginza Mitsukoshi, a department store that originally focused on kimonos but now sells luxury goods from all over the world. The basement floor is a mecca for lovers of beauty products, both men’s and women’s, offering both traditional Japanese beauty goods and limited editions of products from the world’s best brands.

For those looking for even more exclusive items, head to Wako. Famous for having some of the world’s most expensive watches, Wako is worth a visit for its other opulent jewelry and homeware displays as well.

The Imperial Palace has immaculate gardens, bridges, tea houses and more.

What to See in Ginza

You can’t visit Ginza without stopping by Nissan Crossing, a gallery of the famed manufacturer’s state-of-the-art dream cars and classic vintage models that are otherwise unseen by the public. Upstairs in its Crossing Cafe, Nissan showcases its technology by preparing lattes with images of the customer’s face or one of the Nissan models laser-etched on the milk foam.

Ginza is also just a short walk from the Imperial Palace, which is the main residence of the emperor of Japan. While the palace itself is not open to the public, its gardens are always worth a visit. The spaces include historical gates, tea houses, bridges and guard posts. The gardens are well-tended and provide beautiful displays of Japanese flowers, trees and plants. A free tour of the grounds can be arranged online ahead of time.

Where to Dine in Ginza

Being so close to the palace will inspire you to partake in a traditional royal banquet or kaiseki. There are several famous kaiseki options in Ginza, from the difficult-to-book Nihonryori Ryugin, run by prominent Japanese chef Seiji Yamamoto, to the cozy, 10-seater Ginza Kousui, which focuses on seasonal produce from Shizuoka Prefecture.

Each kaiseki restaurant strives to offer varied Japanese flavors — experiences range from six to 14 courses — with a focus on the freshest meat, fish and produce; the best presentation; and authentic, from-the-heart service. Our advice: book well in advance, arrive hungry and don’t be in a rush — these meals can stretch three or four hours.

Punch Room serves retro vibes and unforgettable cocktails nightly.

Where to Drink in Ginza

After a long day of shopping and sightseeing, stop by Punch Room at The Tokyo EDITION, Ginza. Serving a vintage London private club vibe nightly, the cocktail bar pours punches inspired by the regions of Japan and international locations and mixed with the freshest local fruits and fine imported champagne. One of our favorite options is the Matsuri Punch, a chocolate-banana treat.

There’s an extensive mocktail menu for teetotal partiers every night as well. And live music livens the place up even more on weekends.
