Shebara Resort: A Sci-Fi Escape on the Red Sea

Shebara Resort, located on untouched islands off Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk Province, offers a unique and futuristic experience. Rising from the Red Sea, the resort’s design is inspired by radical architecture. Created by Killa Design and developed by Red Sea Global, Shebara features 38 overwater villas and 35 beachfront retreats.

The orb-shaped villas appear like pearls floating across the lagoon, their mirrored shells reflecting both the sky and the sea. From above, the boundary between the architecture and the landscape seems to disappear, offering a seamless fusion of nature and design.

Book your dream vacation at Shebara Resort through TRAVEL ADVANTAGE — MWR Club, and experience the beauty of the Red Sea in style.

For famed designer Paolo Ferrari, founder of Toronto’s Studio Paolo Ferrari, the challenge was to ensure the interiors matched the resort’s otherworldly exterior. “We began with the idea of natural futurism,” Ferrari tells me. “We wanted the spaces to feel forward-looking but grounded in minerality, nature, and craft. It was always about balancing refined engineering with the warmth of something human and handmade.”

That philosophy comes alive the moment you step inside. Curved walls embrace sculptural furnishings, such as sofas that bend with the architecture, bed frames that grow seamlessly into nightstands, and a monolithic bar cabinet that opens hydraulically to reveal a red leather interior. “Every detail is a negotiation between engineering and artistry,” Ferrari explains. “Circular mirrors float like planets above vanities, glass pendants hover like droplets over onyx dining tables, and baths mimic the tidal flow outside. It’s about creating an environment that feels both elemental and extraterrestrial.”

Material choices became central to Shebera’s visual aesthetic. “We made an early decision to use polished stainless steel inside as a key anchoring material,” Ferrari recalls. “That choice alone pushed the resort into a new direction. It takes barefoot luxury and flips it on its head. You don’t expect to see stainless steel in a villa, and suddenly it feels refined, radical, and fresh.”

Perhaps the most unusual feature is the in-room bar. At first glance, it looks like a suspended steel orb, its purpose entirely mysterious. “We wanted an object that was iconic, almost sculptural,” Ferrari says. “Only when you touch the hidden buttons does it open, revealing a leather-wrapped interior. It’s an entirely new way to think about hospitality design-something functional becoming the room’s most surprising, memorable gesture.”

The beachfront villas have the same futuristic design but emphasize the wider space with expansive terraces, infinity pools, and a seamless flow between sand and sea—the most exclusive residences, the Crown and Royal Villas, occupy their own islets. “In the Royal Villa, the bed itself is carved from a single block of onyx,” Ferrari notes. “That’s where you really see the level of craft and ambition in this project. Its architecture expressed through furniture, furniture expressed through architecture.”

While design is Shebara’s showstopper, the guest experience is another bonus. Visitors can choose between five signature restaurants, from Michelin Chef Marco Garfagnini’s Mediterranean Ariamare to the Japanese-Nikkei concept iki.roe, or retreat to the large spa offering pearl and caviar treatments with a meteorite scrub. Pools, yoga pavilions, underwater water adventures, and a dedicated kids club are among the available activities.

But perhaps most important is Shebara’s ecological focus. The entire resort runs off-grid, powered by its own solar farm, desalination plant, and circular waste management system, earning LEED Platinum certification. “We wanted to design something astonishing, yes, but also something responsible,” says Ferrari. “The mirrored architecture doesn’t impose- it reflects back the coral reef, the mangroves, the desert. It disappears into the very landscape it celebrates.”

Accessible from its own dedicated Red Sea International Airport, a quick seaplane ride or a 40-minute boat ride from Turtle Bay, Shebara feels like another planet. For Ferrari, it represents a new frontier in hospitality design. “There’s a ubiquity in how luxury resorts are often approached,” he says. “Here, we wanted to subvert that to create something iconic, futuristic, but still undeniably human. A place where architecture, nature, and craft are all in dialogue.”

Shebara is not just another island resort. It is a thrilling experiment at the edge of the Red Sea, where avant-garde design and ecological responsibility mix, and where, as Ferrari puts it, “luxury doesn’t just meet nature-it mirrors it.”

Escape to Casa Hygge: A Perfect Getaway in Baja California Sur

Nestled on the wild Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, Pescadero is a serene Mexican haven just five miles from Todos Santos and a short drive from Cabo San Lucas. Here lies Casa Hygge, a unique retreat where luxury meets nature.

### The Story Behind Casa Hygge

Former superyacht Captain Federico Martinez Archdale and his partner, Chief Stew Ditte Perschke, have swapped the high seas for desert living. Together, they’ve created Casa Hygge, a residential retreat that blends Nordic minimalism with the raw beauty of Baja.

Meet Federico and Ditte

Ditte, the youngest of three sisters from Denmark, began her journey in Service & Hotel Management in Copenhagen. She later worked as a chief stewardess on luxury yachts, catering to high-profile owners. Federico, born in Acapulco, worked his way from watersports instructor to superyacht captain, driven by his love for the sea.

Your Invitation to Relax and Unwind

Book your next getaway at Casa Hygge and experience the perfect fusion of luxury, nature, and tranquility. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful retreat or a luxurious escape, Casa Hygge offers the perfect setting.

The couple first met on the French Riviera when Federico was working as a bosun on a superyacht stuck in St. Tropez by stormy weather. Ditte was aboard a neighboring yacht anchored at Pampelonne Beach. A ride on a tender, freezing winds, and a warm smile later, a series of “accidental” encounters between the two followed. The Riviera became home for both, until they set sail together on a superyacht traveling to the Mediterranean, where their bond deepened, eventually inspiring them to leave behind decades at sea and pursue new opportunities on land.

By 2021, they were ready to retire from yachting—“pretty much the day France lifted all the Covid restrictions,” Ditte recalls—and chase a dream they had long talked about: creating a cozy seaside escape where comfort was defined not by opulence, but by thoughtfulness.

Finding the right location was a journey in itself. Baja was love at first sight for Ditte—the oasis-like greenery of El Pescadero with its dramatic surf and sunsets. “Driving through all that desert and then suddenly seeing this lush, green patch… it took my breath away,” she says. After four winters of “test living” there, they bought a farm plot, with no neighbors in sight.

When their first construction budget came through, it was a shock for the couple, at around $1,400,000 US, including the land. “That’s a big jump for two ex-yachties working with limited savings and budget,” says Ditte. “In the end, we spent close to $1,700,000,” she adds. “We didn’t fully account for landscaping, which was way more expensive than on the mainland, or the level of custom, high-quality decoration and finishes we wanted to achieve. Despite the unexpected costs and obstacles, we adapted and learned a lot along the way.”

But building in Mexico tested their resilience. They fought off dishonest contractors, survived lawsuits, learned the art of negotiating “gringo prices,” and built much of the property while running on generators for over a year. “When the power finally came on, we sat on the terrace, drank Scotch, and cried,” says Federico. “It wasn’t just electricity—it was the moment we knew we’d made it through the worst.”

Casa Hygge’s design is exactly what its name promises: warm, intimate, unfussy. Locally sourced woods, handpicked stone, hammocks on private terraces, and open-air spaces that blur the line between indoors and out. There’s no restaurant, but a communal lounge and pool surrounded by gardens invite conversations. “Guests often don’t know if it’s a hotel or a private home,” Ditte laughs. “That’s the sweet spot.”

In the world of superyachts, “service goes far beyond five stars,” says Federico. “If they think of it, fancy it, or want it—they’ll get it one way or another.” That culture of anticipating every need shaped Casa Hygge’s DNA. Yet here, they’ve swapped bottomless budgets for resourcefulness, trading gold-plated perfectionism for handmade imperfection that feels warmer and more human.

While they are still involved in the hospitality business, the experience is different. “Even though we both mostly worked for incredibly generous and respectful bosses on reputable yachts, it’s not an easy industry,” says Federico. “In both yachting and hospitality, you’ve got to predict your guests’ next steps, their next request, their next need. But on a superyacht, service goes far beyond five stars. The sky’s the limit for any kind of unique, unexpected, or extravagant request. The expectations are incredibly high, but their budgets mean pretty much anything can be done.”

How A Superyacht Captain Married His Chief Stew And Built A Boutique Hotel In Todos Santos

“We learned from the best, trained to deliver safety, experiences, and service at the very highest end of hospitality,” he adds. “It doesn’t get more luxurious than superyachting, where luxury is always front and center. Because of this background, creating a functional property with genuine comfort for our guests today is, in many ways, easier.”

Rates at Casa Hygge run around $120–$180 per night, with the option to rent out the entire property for weddings or reunions. Most guests arrive via San José del Cabo International Airport, an easy 90-minute drive, and are welcomed with the kind of personal touch that once won over oligarchs and movie stars on the high seas.

“When someone walks into Casa Hygge, I want them to instantly feel like we’ve been expecting them,” says Ditte. “That’s the superyacht training talking—you don’t wait for needs to be voiced, you anticipate them.”

When they designed the property, they focused on the residential condominium concept, and selling each property to friendly, like-minded people at a reasonable price. They included a full property and rental management program, owners get a return on investment, and they keep the monthly income from managing the properties.

Though they could split their time, Ditte and Federico live year-round in El Pescadero. Their integration into the local community—learning Spanish, hiring locally, supporting artisans—has earned them deep respect. “It’s more than just business,” says Ditte. “It’s about belonging.” “The locals have been incredible,” adds Federico. “They saw us show up every day, sweating and working alongside the crew. That mattered.”

As for the future, their next project, Casa Hygge Villas, will expand the concept with larger homes, organic farmland, and staff housing to support their growing team. Yet the heart of it will remain the same: a place where simplicity feels luxurious, where guests slow down, exhale, and feel—if only for a week—entirely at home. “We’ve always believed good people attract good people,” Ditte says. “That’s why Casa Hygge works.”

This New Wellness Resort Has The Largest Spa In Central America—And Sits Inside A Volcanic Crater

For decades, Costa Rica has been a top choice for wellness-focused vacations, offering surf, sun, and spas, making it unique in the region. But what about its neighbor, Panama?

While Panama shares many of the same natural beauty, biodiversity, and connectivity as Costa Rica, it has only recently started to attract wellness tourism. The opening of Hotel La Compañía del Valle, featuring the largest spa in Central America, is set to change that.

As Panama sees more visitors than ever, this mountain retreat in El Valle del Anton highlights one of the country’s most beautiful regions. It’s a destination travelers can now explore for both stunning landscapes and sought-after wellness experiences.

Book your next getaway at Hotel La Compañía del Valle with TRAVEL ADVANTAGE — MWR Club and immerse yourself in luxury and relaxation!

The property has a focus on art and wellness, including a one-of-a-kind sculpture park.

The New Hotel La Compañía

With its eponymous canal and bustling business center, Panama City has long been thought of as more of a place to pass through than to savor. But those in-the-know travelers who have heard the whispers about just how cool Panama City really is will recognize the name of Hotel La Compañía.

After a years-long restoration and transformation of centuries-old buildings in the Casco Antiguo neighborhood of Panama City, Hotel La Compañía debuted in 2022 and immediately set a new standard for travelers in the city.

The hotel occupies an entire city block within Panama City’s historic center, with edifications dating back to the 1600s when Jesuit missionaries from La Compañía de Jesús built the first foundations of the property. Now, the 88-room luxury boutique hotel comprises a Spanish colonial era wing, an 18th century French wing, and a 20th century American wing, each with their own unique style and historical details.

Anchoring the revitalization of Panama City’s historic center and creating arguably the first luxury property of its kind in the city, Hotel La Compañía has felt nothing less than revolutionary from the start. Its new sister resort located in El Valle de Anton seeks to inspire the same excitement around one of the country’s most serene spots.

«Hotel La Compañía is our guiding light,» said Chris Lenz, the owner and visionary behind La Compañía Hotels & Resorts, as we walked the grounds at the newest property. «We knew we had to keep them similar in their essence and feel, and in several of the important details and luxuries. But this is not designed to be a carbon copy of the city property; it can’t be.”

Instead, Lenz offers an important comparison: “Hotel La Compañía del Valle is like [Hotel La Compañía] in that it is made exclusively for its location, fitting the experience travelers are looking for when they come here.»

This New Wellness Resort Has The Largest Spa In Central America—And Sits Inside A Volcanic Crater

Hotel La Compañía del Valle has 70 rooms and suites.

Inside Hotel La Compañía del Valle

Travelers come to El Valle de Ancon looking for rest and relaxation, and they’ll certainly find it here. Hotel La Compañía del Valle is a Tuscan-inspired boutique property spread across several sprawling acres that blend into the forested sides of a long extinct volcanic crater. The hotel’s four wings each make the most of breathtaking views and seem to magnify the fresh mountain air that had beckoned city dwellers for generations.

Each of the property’s 70 rooms and suites offers an oversized balcony or terrace, bringing the outside in in a way that feels intimately authentic to the reason visitors make the journey to this Eden in the first place.

Rooms and suites are thoughtfully designed with furnishings and decor pieces that marry modernity with elegance, with tranquil color palettes that draw in glimpses of the lush surroundings through floor-to-ceiling windows. Amenities include Molton Brown bath products and Nespresso machines for preparing fresh Panamanian coffee. Beds here are so cozy that you’ll want to order the same bedding for your own home.

Hotel La Compañía del Valle also prides itself on its collection of one-of-a-kind art and sculptures. Its sprawling sculpture park is just as much designed to get visitors into a reflective state as the oversized wellness center is.

This New Wellness Resort Has The Largest Spa In Central America—And Sits Inside A Volcanic Crater

A rendering of the spa at Hotel La Compañía del Valle, set to debut within the next few months.

A Wellness Getaway

The Elysium Spa, an 18,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art space, will tie together the entire experience. El Valle de Anton has always been first and foremost a retreat from the city, so this expansive wellness-focused space feels like a natural fit for the destination.

Though work continues at the spa, with its expected opening date scheduled for later this year, I got to peek behind the curtain while I visited and wow, is it impressive. Stone-clad changing rooms and relaxation spaces lead down to Roman baths, where a waterfall invites guests into an indoor-outdoor pool.

Some of the most important leaders in the wellness world consulted on creating the space and the extensive menu of treatments it will offer. Think floatation therapy, chocolate and wine therapies, and more, far beyond just a traditional menus of spas, facials and scrubs.

Panama’s Untouched Interior

With such an expansive spa, this mountain resort is a place to easily spend an entire weekend without setting foot off the property. However, the beauty of the destination is also part of the hotel’s appeal. The town of El Valle de Anton is admittedly tiny, but the stunning mountainsides surrounding are the the perfect addition for a more active wellness getaway.

Hikes range from the relatively easy to more adrenaline pumping, but most offer sweeping views as a well-earned reward. Before I set out on my trek to La India Dormida, the hotel concierge answered all my questions, though they also arranged guides for experiences ranging from hiking and horseback riding to e-biking and day trips further afield.

Venture outside of the resort and you’ll notice that despite being a weekend escape for Panama City’s elite, there’s truly nothing like Hotel La Compañía del Valle in the area.

Though Panama has welcomed a handful of upscale resorts along the coast in recent years, especially in blossoming Bocas del Toro near the border with Costa Rica, there’s little in its lush, ecologically diverse interior to speak of. La Compañía Hotels & Resorts is, again, the first of its kind.

Guests often start their journey in Panama City at the brand’s original Casco Antiguo property before heading to the new mountain resort. The properties are designed to complement each other, offering a seamless travel experience.

More than just fostering brand loyalty, Lenz takes pride in the hotel’s ability to introduce visitors to lesser-known parts of Panama. “Panama has so much to offer, and we’re excited to showcase it in a new way,” he says. This approach reflects the brand’s commitment to making a positive impact in one of the region’s most exciting destinations.

World Travel & Tourism Council: Driving Sustainable Growth

As a global authority, the World Travel & Tourism Council champions sustainable growth, highlighting the economic and social impact of travel and tourism worldwide.

Expert Voices on Women’s Leadership

“These women are skilled, adaptable, and people-centric,” says Esther Hertzfeld, Executive Editor of HOTEL MANAGEMENT. “They advocate boldly for their teams, lead at industry events, and drive progress in investment, operations, and technology across the hospitality ecosystem.”

Sandy Banks, NEWH President, on Inclusive Hospitality

Sandy Banks, President of NEWH, emphasizes the need for inclusive cultures in hospitality.

Founded 41 years ago by visionary women, NEWH addressed the lack of equality and diversity in hospitality. Today, it’s a global nonprofit fostering scholarships, education, leadership, and recognition for all underrepresented groups—across genders, generations, and cultures.

NEWH’s mission drives equity and inclusion through diverse programs, building a global community where everyone feels valued. Testimonials from scholarship recipients and conference attendees highlight the impact of our inclusive educational and networking initiatives.

Hospitality touches every culture and corner of the globe—through travel, lodging, and dining. To thrive, the industry must reflect this diversity. Inclusion isn’t optional; it’s critical for business success and community well-being. NEWH creates welcoming spaces that mirror global diversity, ensuring everyone feels at home.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, shares insights on women reshaping hospitality.

Today’s talent sees travel and tourism as a dynamic global employer with long-term potential. The sector’s evolution as a hub for economic growth and innovation attracts ambitious women seeking impactful careers.

Educational institutions now emphasize leadership, entrepreneurship, and technology in hospitality, shifting from a service-only focus. Yet, achieving gender equity in top roles requires systemic change—data-driven targets, accountable leadership, and clear C-suite pathways.

Women are redefining hospitality with agile, values-driven ventures. Leaders like Andrea Grisdale of IC Bellagio and Gloria Fluxà of family enterprises showcase diverse leadership paths, fueled by mentorship and strong networks.

There’s A New Luxury Travel Trend Emerging—It’s Not What You Expect

Luxury Travel: Redefined

Luxury travel has always been associated with indulgence and exclusivity. Picture yourself lounging by a glamorous pool, enjoying a relaxing massage, savoring gourmet dishes from award-winning chefs, and watching the sunset paint the sky in vibrant hues. These are the typical images of a high-end vacation.

The Rise of Challenge Travel

However, there’s a new trend emerging among adventurous travelers—Challenge Travel. This trend moves beyond the traditional comforts of luxury and focuses on bold, transformative outdoor experiences.

What is Challenge Travel?

Challenge travel, or Type 2 Fun, offers demanding and physically taxing experiences. While these activities might feel tough in the moment, they provide a deep sense of fulfillment once completed. This is a chance for travelers to push their limits, build resilience, and discover a new sense of adventure.

A New Type of Luxury

For those who seek more than just leisure and luxury, challenge travel is a way to test your fortitude and adaptability. It’s about embracing a journey that leaves you feeling accomplished and enriched, with unforgettable memories of personal growth.

Experience wild landscapes on a private guided tour—the ultimate luxury.

This shift, where a new generation of travelers are seeking out more meaningful happenings and opportunities for personal growth through intrepid exploits, is reflected in the tourism business—in spades.

According to a report by Grand View Research, the global adventure tourism market size is expected to blossom from more than $406 billion in 2024 to $1 trillion in 2030. This includes a wide range of multi-sport outdoor activities, including rafting, trekking, cycling, swimming, and more. This is good—and profitable—news for adventure travel companies looking to make their mark on the industry.

Yes, it’s true: the global adventure tourism market is positioned to become one of the fastest expanding tourist sectors, especially as a result of travelers prioritizing not only health and wellness, but also, somatic and cerebral prowess.

Wildflowers abound on this hut-to-hut adventure in the French and Italian Alps.

A Leader in the Adventure Travel Space

One adventure company that is leading the charge and meeting the moment is Eleven, curators of hyper-personalized guided outdoor adventures that utilize off-the-grid luxury lodgings in sought-after destinations including Iceland, France, Canada, New Zealand, Chile, Bahamas, Colorado, and Alaska.

For those seeking out big adventures, zesty romps in nature that will test your mettle, look no further than Eleven’s hut-to-hut multi-day hiking journey.

You’ll arrive in the lovely hilltop farming hamlet of Le Miror in the Tarentaise Valley of the French Alps, home to the most cozy chalets with windows flanked by wooden shutters and lined with flower boxes.

Delights are found around every corner, through every window, at Eleven Chalet Hibou.

The New Definition of Luxury

Eleven Chalet Hibou will be your adventure base camp. This high-alpine haven in the alps is where you’ll learn about the local Savoie culture, enjoy lavish and delectable meals and French wine, and relax in the Finnish sauna or patio hot tub. What really makes this chalet so indelible, however, is the amenable and caring staff, who assist with your every need and wish and build genuine connections that are almost unheard of at other luxe properties.

But it’s not all vin and fromage.

On this custom tour, you’ll cycle through the bucolic countryside on pedal-assist mountain bikes; sample fragrant cheeses while cowbells echo in the distance; magnify your grin whitewater rafting on the Isère River; rock climb or clip in to the via Cordata; and subpoena your grit while canyoneering in the Chalami Canyon in the Aosta Valley of Italy.

Swimming in the high alpine Lac Noir is a worthy adventure.

Hiking from Hut to Hut in The Alps

For the trekking portion of the trip, you’ll hike for several miles, up and over two mountain passes—Col De Montseti and the historic Col du Mont pass on the France and Italy border where you’ll see sobering wartime relics.

With 4,800 feet of ascent and over 5,000 feet of descent, you’ll make your way from Refuge les Mollettes in the Ruitor Valley on the French side to Rifugio Valgrisenche in the Valgrisenche Valley on the Italian side.

Expect to marvel at saddles blanketed in blueberries and multi-hued wildflowers, marmots trilling their warnings, ibex perched on rocky spines, and neon critters that wiggle and hop underfoot. And, if you get the chance to jump in the brisk Lac Noir mid-way through your trek, don’t pass it up—it’s an opportunity to feel truly alive.

An Elevated Stay

Once you finish for the day, and you’ve arrived at your beautifully renovated sheep herders’ hut, stone structures that date back to the early 1900s, you’ll be rewarded for your efforts with a chef-prepared al fresco meal complete with locally-foraged Génépi, a traditional herbal apéritif. (Twelve Interiors, led by Blake Pike, co-owner of Eleven, are the masterminds behind the interior design for all of the properties in the Eleven lineup.)

It’s an adren-zen multi-sport adventure where Eleven is the vanguard in the imaginative new era of challenge travel.
