Discover Colombia: More Than Just a Destination
From lush rainforests to stunning coastlines, Colombia offers a world of adventure and beauty. In recent years, this South American country has undergone a dramatic transformation, drawing travelers from around the globe.
A Rapid Rise in Popularity
Few places have experienced such a remarkable shift in public consciousness. Just 15 years ago, Colombia was largely off-limits due to security concerns. Now, thanks to significant safety improvements and vibrant cultural scenes, the country is emerging as a must-visit spot.
In 2024, travel to Colombia reached new heights, with over 6.7 million visitors exploring its diverse landscapes—its bustling cities, majestic mountains, and tropical rainforests. According to a 2025 report, this marks a near double-digit increase compared to previous years, reflecting Colombia’s growing appeal.
Beyond the Mainstream
While top destinations like Cartagena and Medellín remain popular, a new wave of travelers is seeking out lesser-known treasures. These explorers are venturing into regions still whispered about in travel circles, eager to discover Colombia’s hidden gems.
Runways of Hidden Beauty
To support this trend, Colombia’s tourism authority, ProColombia, has launched an exciting initiative. The Runways of Hidden Beauty campaign focuses on revitalizing 20 remote airstrips, opening up access to off-the-beaten-path destinations. This effort aims to strengthen infrastructure, boost local economies, and showcase the country’s rich diversity.
The results are impressive. In 2024, Colombia’s economy saw an $8.34 billion impact from tourism—a 31.4% rise from pre-pandemic levels. This growth offers a real opportunity for development in previously overlooked areas.
A Vision for Transformation
Carmen Caballero, President of ProColombia, emphasizes the broader vision: “We hope this initiative not only boosts tourism but sparks true community transformation.” Better connectivity can bring prosperity to local communities and foster trust and closeness between visitors and residents.

Discovering Colombia’s Hidden Landscapes
Exploring untouched sceneries allows visitors to see a different side of Colombia, boosting local economies and promoting sustainable tourism.
Ongoing Development
Currently, runway renovations are happening at five key locations across Colombia’s top tourist regions: Greater Caribbean, Pacific, Amazon-Orinoco, Colombian Massif, and the Eastern Andes. These upgrades are expected to conclude by December, opening new routes to remote villages and hidden cities.
One notable site is Bajo Baudó on Colombia’s Pacific Coast. This lesser-visited area in Chocó is one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth, according to the World Wildlife Foundation. It boasts a 775-million-acre protected zone filled with wet rainforests, mangrove forests, and stunning unexpected landscapes. Few outside visitors know about or have reached this incredible spot.
In addition, new airstrips in Cumaribo and Barrancominas will give travelers access to the Matavén Jungle and the Orinoco River. This region was once believed to be the legendary El Dorado. Located along the route to the Colombian Amazon, it’s home to numerous indigenous communities and a multicultural identity that’s truly unique to Colombia.
A New Side of Colombia
These developments invite travelers to explore hidden treasures and discover Colombia’s rich landscapes. At the same time, they support local communities and foster economic growth in previously isolated areas.

Projects Completed
Nine airstrips have already been upgraded as part of Colombia’s tourism campaign. These sites now receive regular maintenance and performance checks to ensure they stay in top condition.
One success story is San Andrés, a stunning Caribbean island with white sands—located over 450 miles north of Cartagena. Though far from the mainland, it now plays a major role in redefining Colombia as a Caribbean destination. Thanks to improvements, San Andrés has gained worldwide recognition, beating out places like the Galápagos Islands and Rio de Janeiro to be named South America’s Best Beach Destination in the 2024 World Travel Awards.
Another exciting upgrade is in Nuquí, a remote Pacific Coast spot. This area offers excellent surfing, hiking to waterfalls in untouched jungles, and whale watching. Between July and October, families can see humpback whales migrating through the area.
In the Amazon region, the new airstrip in Leticia is now fully operational. Located deep inside the Amazon rainforest, it opens new opportunities for tourism. Although Colombia’s Amazon tourism is still growing compared to Peru and Brazil, increased access could bring a new wave of visitors to explore this prehistoric landscape.
Colombia’s coastline and remote regions are opening up, inviting more travelers and boosting local economies. The future of Colombia’s diverse landscapes is brighter than ever.

Enhanced access opens up exciting new possibilities — from pristine beaches to lush tropical rainforests.
Growing Tourist Interest
Right now, most visitors to these newly accessible sites are locals or Colombians. According to ProColombia, only about 1.73% to 2.22% of arrivals are from distant markets like the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, and Argentina. But that’s expected to change as more flights start arriving.
Colombia is actively working to increase flight options to meet rising demand. In 2023, Colombia welcomed 6.1 million international travelers. In 2024, that number grew to over 6.7 million, and this year, crossing the 7-million mark looks likely.
When United Airlines launched a new flight from Houston to Medellín last fall, tickets sold out quickly. Other airlines, like Air Canada, are also offering more flights. Avianca, Colombia’s national airline, is adding new destinations in U.S. cities like Tampa. Even more exciting, Qatar Airways will soon operate nonstop flights from Doha to Bogotá starting this summer.
The Future is Bright
As international visitors continue to grow, the popularity of Colombia’s main cities—Bogotá, Medellín, and Cartagena—remains strong. Last year, these cities received 81.4% of all international visitors, with Bogotá at 35.3%, Medellín at 23.9%, and Cartagena at 22.2%.
Meanwhile, easier access to less-crowded, but equally amazing destinations will help boost tourism across the entire country. It’s a rising tide that will lift all the hidden gems.
