With MWR Life and Travel Advantage, you can explore this paradise affordably and build a career as a global travel ambassador.

Why Mauritius Captivates Retirees

Mauritius boasts a subtropical climate—70s°F at sea level, cooler 60s°F in the mountains—perfect for outdoor adventures like golf, sailing, or snorkeling amid coral reefs. Its volcanic landscapes and vibrant culture draw nature lovers and expats alike.

With a stable democracy, low crime, and affordable, high-quality healthcare, Mauritius is one of Africa’s safest havens. English is official, but French and Mauritian Creole add multicultural flair, making integration effortless. Live comfortably on $1,400–$3,500/month, depending on your lifestyle.

Tax Perks for Mauritius Retirees

Retirees with foreign pensions or savings pay no taxes unless funds are remitted to Mauritius (15% flat tax). No capital gains, wealth, or property taxes apply, though property purchases may incur transfer fees. Inheritance tax was abolished in 2005, but U.S. citizens must follow U.S. estate tax rules.

Easy Visa and Residency Options

Over 50? Prove $1,500/month or $18,000/year for a 10-year Residence Permit, extendable to 20 years after three years. Alternatively, invest $375,000 in approved property schemes (IRS, PDS, RES) for residency without minimum stay requirements.

Top Retirement Destinations in Mauritius

La Bastide: A Taste Of Provence- York City

La Bastide: A Taste Of Provence, One Hour From New York City
La Bastide: Michelin-Starred Dining & MWR Life Travel Advantage

La Bastide: A Michelin-Starred Escape in North Salem

As a passionate traveler, I’m always chasing experiences that blend culture, cuisine, and connection. La Bastide, a Michelin-starred gem in North Salem, New York, delivers just that. Nestled in the serene Hudson Valley, this intimate six-table restaurant, helmed by Chef Andrea Calstier and Elena Oliver, brings the flavors of Provence to life with a local twist. From the moment you arrive, you’re transported to a world of culinary artistry and warm hospitality, making it a must-visit for any food-loving wanderer.

A Taste of Provence in the Hudson Valley

Just an hour from Manhattan, North Salem’s rolling hills and quiet charm feel like a European countryside escape. La Bastide’s stone patio, overlooking a lush herb garden, sets the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. Sip an aperitif, savor delicate canapés, and let the tranquil views wash over you. Inside, the dining room’s open kitchen and curated wine wall create an intimate yet transparent atmosphere, inviting you to witness the magic of each dish’s creation.

Why La Bastide Stands Out

Chef Andrea’s Provencal roots shine through in a menu that’s 80% seafood, celebrating East Coast bounty from Maine to Long Island. Seasonal ingredients from Hudson Valley farmers elevate every plate, whether it’s a reimagined family recipe or a microseasonal creation. The tasting menu, offered at 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM, Wednesday through Sunday, pairs perfectly with a 600-bottle French wine list curated by sommelier David Berube. From amuse-bouche to desserts like chocolate with goat cheese, every bite is a journey.

Cenadou Bistrot: Casual Yet Captivating

Upstairs, Cenadou Bistrot offers a laid-back counterpart to La Bastide’s elegance. With 50 seats, a cozy bar, and a menu blending Provencal and Hudson Valley flavors, it’s perfect for a relaxed lunch after a fine-dining evening. Locals love it—Martha Stewart even hosted a holiday party here. Whether you’re craving steak frites or a charcuterie board, Cenadou delivers charm without compromising quality.

Best Of Trondheim On A Norway Cruise

How To See The Best Of Trondheim On A Norway Cruise
Trondheim Norway Cruise Hidden Gem: Traveler Insights with MWR Life Ambassador and Travel Advantage

Trondheim Norway Cruise Hidden Gem: Traveler Insights with MWR Life Ambassador and Travel Advantage

As a dedicated wanderer constantly seeking out off-the-beaten-path adventures, I was captivated by the vibrant, colorful buildings hugging the river in Trondheim's Bakklandet neighborhood. Nestled between verdant forested hills and a serpentine river, Trondheim isn't the most prominent stop on Norway cruise itineraries, but that's what gives it its unique appeal for travelers like me.

This historic Viking capital features Norway's most impressive cathedral, a lively cafe culture, and tranquil cobbled streets where locals bike commute throughout the year. Compact and ideal for walking, it provides the right mix of history, charm, and authenticity to make a day ashore truly memorable, without the overwhelming crowds found in other Norwegian cruise ports.

While not as staple as Bergen or Ålesund on cruise schedules, Trondheim attracts a regular influx of ships, especially on Arctic-bound voyages. It positions itself as a cultural and geographic midpoint, with cruise lines such as Silversea, Holland America, MSC Cruises, Ambassador Cruise Line, and AIDA frequently visiting during the season.

Whether you're joining ship-organized excursions or exploring independently, here's my personal guide to making the most of your Trondheim cruise stop, infused with MWR Life travel tips for savvy wanderers.

Where Ships Dock in Trondheim

Most cruise vessels berth at Kai 68 in the Brattøra district, just a leisurely 10-minute walk to the city center. Although some operators provide shuttle services, the route is straightforward and accessible for most visitors. Clearly signposted, it passes by Rockheim, Norway's national museum dedicated to popular music, set in a striking modern edifice. A pedestrian bridge crosses the railway near Trondheim Central Station—it's somewhat steep, but an elevator is available for assistance.

During busier periods with multiple ships, additional vessels may use the Ila district pier, approximately 25 minutes on foot from the center. Shuttles are usually offered, and public buses are nearby. If you prefer walking, opt for Hospitalsgata and Dronningens gate for a more serene and scenic path.

Passengers on the Norwegian coastal voyages via Hurtigruten or Havila dock at their specific terminal, separate from the main cruise area. It's about a 15-20 minute walk to the central parts from there.

Must-See Trondheim Highlights

Your adventure should begin at Nidaros Cathedral, Norway's revered national sanctuary. Constructed atop the grave of Saint Olav, the Viking king who Christianized Norway, it has been a pilgrimage destination for nearly 1,000 years. If your schedule and mobility allow, explore the atmospheric crypt with its medieval gravestones and ascend the narrow spiral staircase to the tower for breathtaking city panoramas.

The captivating west front of Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway, is a sight that lingers in memory.

Right beside it, the Archbishop’s Palace hosts a meticulously curated museum exhibiting Norway’s royal regalia and archaeological discoveries from the cathedral's history. For fellow history enthusiasts, a combined ticket for these attractions is convenient and offers great value.

A brief walk away lies Bakklandet, the city's most enchanting district. Cross the iconic red Old Town Bridge to step into a picturesque realm of brightly painted wooden houses, many transformed into inviting cafes. Just be mindful of the cyclists zipping by.

Excursions or Independent Exploration?

Trondheim is one of Norway's most user-friendly ports for solo exploration, but guided excursions can provide deeper insights if that's your preference. Some tours visit Kristiansten Fortress for expansive views and uncover Trondheim’s lesser-known World War II stories. Others head beyond the city to Sverresborg, an open-air folk museum that brings rural Norwegian life to vivid reality through historic buildings gathered from across the country.

Priced around $45, the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus might seem costly, but it's often more economical than similar tours from your cruise line. With only four stops, they are strategically placed, so plan your itinerary to minimize waits or extra walking.

Consider this alternative: stroll to Nidaros Cathedral, then hop on the tram to the city forest. Along the way, enjoy stunning vistas of the city and immerse in the Norwegian love for outdoor living. On a clear day, bring a picnic to savor by the lake—pure bliss for any traveler.

Know Before You Go to Trondheim

Trondheim's weather can be fickle, even in summer months. Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket and sturdy walking shoes. Credit cards are ubiquitous, with contactless payments the standard. English is spoken widely, making interactions seamless.

Note that buses and trams accept cash only, with limited change available. Most Norwegians use travel cards or the AtB app—available in English—for ticketing. If you have mobile data, the app is the most convenient and affordable option. Alternatively, purchase a day pass in advance from citywide Narvesen or 7-Eleven stores.

If your time in Trondheim is constrained, prioritize Nidaros Cathedral, Bakklandet, and a leisurely stroll along the Nidelva river. With thoughtful planning, even a brief port call can offer an unforgettable peek into one of Norway’s most livable cities.

Book Hotels Profitably Through Travel Advantage

As a traveler maximizing MWR Life guest member advantages, I consistently use Travel Advantage for securing the best hotel deals. This service provides exclusive discounts on accommodations globally, ideal for prolonging your Trondheim visit or organizing broader Norway explorations. MWR Life Ambassador Guide: Unlock Guest Member Benefits at Royal Lahaina Resort in Kaanapali, Maui – How to Become MWR Life Ambassador via Franchise

The Branches Blooms Anew: Community Symphony in Royal Lahaina's Heart

As an MWR Life guest member MWR Life travel aficionado, The Branches enveloped me like a long-lost friend's hug—Royal Lahaina's reborn nexus for melodies and shared stories along Kaanapali Beach. Post the 2023 inferno's shadows, Kaanapali's kin united with Lahaina's soul to resurrect not mere bricks, but bonds and dreams. Royal Lahaina, unscathed yet empathetic, shuttered briefly in solidarity, unveiling in November 2024 a fiercer vow to locals, 'āina, and wanderers like us.

May's visit, fresh from sweeping renovations, unveiled The Branches to harmonious locals and visitors alike, with acoustic vibes, savory nibbles, and elixirs under the venerable ficus. Since Maui claimed my spirit in 2000, that twilight evoked Lorca's duende—a profound, tear-stirring elixir of earth and joy. Newcomers mingled seamlessly with veterans, tapping the locale's mystic pulse. For MWR Life ambassadors crafting teams online, it's the ultimate immersive chapter in your narrative.

Bungalow Whispers or Tower Panoramas: Tailoring Your Royal Lahaina Reverie

My bungalow sanctuary gazed upon verdant lawns dissolving into the Pacific's symphony, doors ajar to summon the sea's timeless tales at whim. This seamless nature bond amplifies MWR Life travel's essence—repose as kin, sans the frenzy.

Or ascend the 12-story Lahaina Kai tower, transcending palm sways for pristine sights of Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi dancing afar. Bungalow intimacy or tower expanse: as guest member MWR Life, attune to the resort's island cadence, enriched by franchise-fueled freedoms.

Aloha in Action: Service as Timeless Ohana at Royal Lahaina

Here, service breathes authenticity—sincere, story-spun by decade-devoted stewards eager for 'talk story' interludes, mirroring the camaraderie of assembling your MWR Life online representative squad. Oʻahu-born Ford Ushijima, food and beverage maestro with two decades' roots, personifies this archival warmth.

Lahaina Noon's poolside haven—evoking solar noon's shadowless grace—marries Americana with Hawaiian heirlooms via chef Vanessa Castillo's wizardry. Her garlic shrimp atop silken taro grits? A dawn-born wonder I replicate in distant kitchens. Adjoin at Pineapple Moon's breezy bar, clinking to MWR Life ambassador triumphs.

Revitalized Sanctuaries: Alana Spa's Oceanfront Rebirth, Myths of Maui Luau, and Cultural Depths

Alana Spa, now gloriously oceanfront along Kā‘anapali's edge, gifted Cambria Russell's profound massage amid upgrades—erasing travel's toll, reigniting bliss for on-the-move MWR Life ambassadors.

Myths of Maui Luau, Maui's venerable saga, pulses with Polynesian chronicles, fiery dancers, and communal feasts—audience alchemy at its finest for guest member MWR Life sojourns.

Seek the Hawaiian Cultural Center; commune with director Makalapua "Maka" Kanuha for lore that layers your voyage, harmonizing with MWR Life's ethos for discerning voyagers from Asia's silk roads, Europe's cobblestones, to CIS's vast steppes.

Seeds of Hope: Aiding Maui's Renaissance with Treecovery

Treading Maui's west, honor the 2023 scars by sowing aid. Royal Lahaina allies with Treecovery, inviting MWR Life guest members to cultivate saplings for phoenix-like homes. Engage in this verdant rite, grasping reforestation's ripple—your touch in eternity's weave.

Montreal In 48 Hours-Weekend Escape

Montreal In 48 Hours: Your Ultimate Weekend Escape

Old Montreal in the summer

Montreal, in the Canadian province of Quebec, is a brilliant city for a weekend break at any time of the year but the summer is really a special time to visit. If you’re there in late June/early July, the fantastic ten-day Montreal International Jazz Festival is a musical extravaganza with hundreds of gigs, many outdoors and free. For an introduction to the city, a walking tour of one of the neighborhoods and a boat tour around the harbor are both highly recommended. Or rent a bike for a more active tour of a city that has more bike paths than anywhere else in North America. Drinks on one of the numerous terraces in Old Montreal is blissful way to finish the day. And squeeze in an excursion outside of the city if you’d like to experience a less urban vibe too.

Where to Stay in Montreal

Montreal In 48 Hours: Your Ultimate Weekend Escape

The spacious roof terrace at Hotel Monville, Montreal

Hip Hotel Monville, a 4-star hotel with 269 spacious rooms, housed in a sleek glass and concrete high-rise, is within an easy stroll of both Old Montreal and the shops of rue Sainte Catherine. The chic public spaces include a ground floor lobby bar, a cafe, various meeting areas and a spacious outdoor rooftop terrace. The cafe serves an excellent breakfast that includes proper (not runny) scrambled eggs, local cheeses and the famous Montreal bagels. Montreal artist Valerie Jodoin Keaton’s commission to create a mural for the ground floor space features vintage black-and-white photographs of Montreal’s history.

Montreal In 48 Hours: Your Ultimate Weekend Escape

Guest room at Hotel Monville, Montreal

Design is by local architects ACDF Architecture, known for their sleek, contemporary aesthetic. Rooms have a cool urban vibe, with floor-to-ceiling windows for stellar city views. A double room is from $270 per night, depending on the room type and dates of the stay.

Firmly committed to innovation, in addition to a regular check in desk with a staff member, Hotel Monville offers a self-check-in option, allowing guests to receive their room keys in moments. And a fun techie feature is the hotel is the first and only hotel in Canada to offer room service via an autonomous delivery robot. This robot delivers orders directly to guests’ rooms quickly and efficiently. You’ll see the cute robot hanging about in the bar area waiting to help. Complementing their efforts in innovation is sustainability which has been recognised with a Gold certification from GreenStep Sustainable Tourism, a Canadian organization that evaluates and supports tourism businesses in their sustainable development efforts.

Montreal In 48 Hours: Your Ultimate Weekend Escape

Le Germain Hotel Montreal

Hotel Le Germain is a wonderful 5-star, just off St. Catherine Street, in the heart of Montreal’s shopping district. Awarded a coveted Michelin Key last year, Le Germain has 136 rooms with the space, chic design and ultra comfort you’d expect from a boutique hotel. A queen room is from $400. Always keen to support local talent, works by Montreal artists are displayed in corridors, elevators, and rooms. And of course, the famous mural "Dazzle My Heart" by Canadian artist Michelle Hoogveld covers the hotel's facade and beckons you to enter. The mural features 80 different colors and geometric shapes and can be spotted from miles away which is handy if you get lost on your way back from sightseeing.

Sustainability is certainly not just a buzz word at Le Germain. From the opening of the family-run business’s very first hotel 36 years ago (in Quebec City), long before sustainability became a standard practice, sibling founders Christiane Germain and Jean-Yves Germain took concrete steps to protect the environment with sustainable practices: water and energy management, prioritizing local suppliers, partnering with local artisans, and choosing high-quality, durable materials. Today, they have Green key certification, a global standard of excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. They’ve managed to almost eliminate single-use plastic water bottles with a water fountain on each floor where guests can refill their own water bottles or the carafes found in every room. Sustainable materials have been used throughout the property, including custom furniture manufactured by Renova, a Canadian supplier renowned for its low-toxicity materials. Unusually, instead of single-use slippers, they use washable and reusable slippers made by Kotmo, a Quebec B Corp company.

What to See and Do

Montreal In 48 Hours: Your Ultimate Weekend Escape

The Catholic Church of St. Michael, Montreal

A walking tour, or even better, a food tour is a great way to get the taste of a city. Secret Food Tours offer a few super options, including one in Mile End, a journey through Montreal's hippest foodie neighborhood ,with stops at five places and history of the area thrown in (including a stop outside of the Catholic Church of St. Michael, modeled after Istanbul’s Hagia Sofia). Mile End, named after London’s Mile End, was the birthplace of many creatives including writer Mordecai Richler, musician Leonard Cohen and the band Arcade Fire. The tastings on the food tour can change but generally include a delicious sweet pastry to start, “street gnocci,” a famous Montreal bagel, a moreish cannoli and of course, the French Canadian classic, poutine.

Montreal In 48 Hours: Your Ultimate Weekend Escape

Jean Talon market in Little Italy, Montreal

Spade & Palacio also offer brilliant foodie walking tours. Started by two native Montrealers, the small independent tour company prides itself on offering non-touristy tours. Their “Beyond the Market Tour” visits the famous Jean-Talon Market (the largest in North America) as well as lesser known venues in Little Italy.

Basilica of Notre-Dame of Montreal and Place d'Armes — Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Picturesque Old Montreal is a must. Start with a visit to the historic Notre-Dame Basilica, followed by an exhibition at the contemporary arts center, Phi. Currently on show is Bingo, the first solo museum-scale exhibition for artist Nico Williams, winner of the 2024 Sobey Prize. After your cultural fix, wander the cobbled streets of the Old town and and stop for lunch at one of the pretty outdoor terraces. French brasserie Gaspar is a good choice with a menu offering a superb tuna tataki, cassoulet and croque madame.

Daytrips Near Montreal

Montreal In 48 Hours: Your Ultimate Weekend Escape

Strom-Saint-Hilaire

If you can fit in a day or afternoon excursion outside of the city, there are plenty of options. Just 30 minutes south of Montreal is the glorious Strøm Spa Mont-Saint-Hilaire, in the heart of the Gault Nature Reserve. This thermal spa is a little piece of paradise, surrounded by nature, with views of Mont Saint-Hilaire. There are a series of pools in different temperatures, a Finnish sauna, Eucalyptus and essential oil steam rooms and plenty of indoor and outdoor relaxation areas with fireplaces.

Montreal In 48 Hours: Your Ultimate Weekend Escape

The Nord restaurant at Strom Spa Mont Saint-Hilaire

The Nord restaurant at Strom Spa Mont Saint-Hilaire is alone worth the excursion, brilliantly showcasing the products and flavors of the region. Smoked duck breast with Jerusalem artichoke; Trout gravlax with fennel confit and a fine Artisanal platter with local cheeses, meat and fish are among the menu highlights.

A blissful visit to Strom Mont-Saint-Hilaire anytime is $99 CAD; Monday- Thursday $74 CAD ($64 CAD after 5PM).

Montreal In 48 Hours: Your Ultimate Weekend Escape

Le Mas des Patriotes

Another wonderful excursion close to Montreal is a vineyard tour. There are three wineries close together in or around in the Vallée-du-Richelieu, 30 minutes south of Montreal. Le Mas des Patriotes is an essential visit both for its lovely rural location, pretty tasting room and its superior products. Established in 2003 by France Cliche, who owns the vineyard with her husband, the winery specialises in organic wines. Madame Cliche is passionate about organic farming and focuses on producing high-quality, elegant wines that reflect the terroir of the Richelieu Valley. This winery really feels like an insider secret but it deserves to be better known as the quality of the wines (especially the whites) and keen prices (all bottles are under $30) are excellent. The wines from Le Mas are currently only available in Quebec so a tasting at the winery ($20 for 5 wines) and a nosey around the attached antique shop make for a great afternoon out of the city.

But if you ask locals where they're heading for a true beach escape, the answer is clear: Santa Marta.

Just a short drive north from Cartagena, Santa Marta emerges as a coastal treasure that perfectly embodies Colombia's nickname, "the Country of Beauty." As it marks its 500th anniversary this year, this gem is stepping out from Cartagena's shadow, drawing more visitors with its authentic charm. For MWR Life Ambassadors and guest members MWR Life, exploring Santa Marta through MWR Life Travel opens doors to exclusive perks, making every trip more rewarding.

Why Santa Marta Stands Out as Colombia's Premier Beach Destination

Santa Marta might be the third-largest city on Colombia's Caribbean shore and not even in the country's top ten by population, but its impact is immense. As the oldest European settlement in Colombia, it pulses with historical and cultural depth that has influenced the entire nation. In a year when Colombia welcomed a record 6.8 million tourists, Santa Marta led with explosive growth—26.1% more national visitors in February and 19.9% in March compared to the previous year. International arrivals surged by 22.7%, ranking third nationwide, despite limited direct flights via Copa Airlines from Panama.

Imagine arriving at this seaside haven: "Bienvenidos a Santa Marta," I say to myself every time I arrive. This sweet seaside haven offers something for everyone: from the oldest city's storied past to the rare chance to journey from Caribbean waves to snow-capped peaks in one day. Tomas Ford, General Manager at Santa Marta Marriott Resort Playa Dormida, captures it perfectly: "Its blend of history, culture, biodiversity, and coastal charm delivers an authentic experience."

For foodies craving Caribbean flavors, families wanting relaxed fun, beach lovers chasing golden sunsets, or adventure seekers diving into jungle treks—Santa Marta delivers. While Cartagena buzzes with urban energy, its beaches fall short. Santa Marta, however, boasts Tayrona National Park, home to Colombia's—and arguably South America's—finest shores. Palm-fringed golden sands stretch untouched within protected lands, capping visitors to prevent crowds and preserve paradise. As an MWR Life guest member, these serene spots become even more accessible through tailored MWR Life Travel itineraries.

Destination Diversity: From Beaches to Jungle Wonders Near Santa Marta

Unmatched Coastal and Mountain Adventures

What draws crowds to Santa Marta? Everything from pristine beaches to profound nature escapes. Beyond the coast, the surrounding mountains hide geological treasures Cartagena can't match. Venture into the jungle for endemic plants, wildlife, and secret waterfalls with natural pools. The highlight? A four-day trek to Ciudad Perdida, the "Lost City" guarded by indigenous communities until the 1970s. Often likened to Machu Picchu, but with far fewer visitors—only dozens reach its terraced ruins daily—this site offers an intimate, protected encounter unlike any overrun ancient wonder.

"We've seen more travelers seeking meaningful, nature-connected experiences, and this region excels," notes Ford. For those optimizing trips with long-tail queries like "best hidden beaches in Santa Marta Colombia for European Asia CIS travelers," or voice searches such as "how to explore Tayrona National Park as MWR Life Travel guest member," Santa Marta aligns perfectly with search intent for authentic, low-key luxury.

The Next Half Millennium: Celebrating Santa Marta's 500th Anniversary

2025 is already shaping up as a stellar year for Santa Marta tourism, amplified by its quincentennial festivities. Expect vibrant cultural events, traditional music, local gastronomy like bollos, arepas de huevo, and fresh seafood, all while strolling streets steeped in 500 years of history. Celebrations continue through the month, but the lively spirit will echo all year.

While Santa Marta's airport lags behind Cartagena's international connections, its daily domestic flights from Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali make it accessible. For many, the city's serene vibe, pristine bays, and natural beauty—untouched and unchanging—are the real draw. As an MWR Life Travel enthusiast, this balance of tranquility and adventure is why I keep returning.
