The aurora borealis is sparked by solar wind—charged particles from the sun interacting with Earth’s magnetic field. A coronal hole, a gap in the sun’s outer atmosphere, releases high-speed solar wind, enhancing auroral displays when aligned with Earth’s magnetic field. With the sun nearing the end of its solar maximum in late 2024, 2025 promises stunning aurora sightings, especially in the years following the peak.
