For cruise enthusiasts like my friend and me, nothing beats the serenity of sailing across vibrant blue waters, leaving daily stresses behind. After hearing rave reviews, we embarked on Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady for a 14-night transatlantic journey from Miami to Barcelona, featuring 10 blissful sea days. This adults-only experience stood out distinctly from other cruises, even those exclusively for adults, and left us eager to book again next year.
A transatlantic cruise crosses the Atlantic Ocean, connecting North America and Europe with extended sea time. Departing from Miami, our first stop was the Canary Islands on day 10. The Scarlet Lady’s vibrant atmosphere made every moment unforgettable, enhanced by unique touches like its indulgent ice cream parlor.
As first-time Virgin cruisers, or “Virgin virgins,” we embraced the playful onboard culture, where lighthearted innuendos—like the ice cream shop named Lick Me Till Ice Cream—add charm without crossing into rowdy territory. The ship blends casual sophistication with a celebratory vibe, distinct from typical party boats.
The diversity of guests, ranging from their 20s to 80s and from varied backgrounds, was striking. The presence of a resident drag queen fostered an LGBTQ+ inclusive environment, with respect and friendliness creating a refreshing atmosphere.
Book Club: A Surprising Highlight
Unexpectedly, the book club became a trip highlight. Virgin offers three book clubs on transatlantic itineraries, providing copies of titles like Anxious People by Fredrik Backman, Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano, and People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry. We joined all three, meeting three times during the cruise for thought-provoking discussions. The diverse perspectives sparked engaging conversations, leading us to create a post-cruise Facebook group to stay connected.

Staterooms: Compact Comfort with a Twist
Virgin’s staterooms use an A and Z side system instead of odd-even numbering, simplifying navigation. The cabins are small but lively, with red accents reflecting the brand’s signature style. The L-shaped twin bed layout for non-couples was quirky—one bed’s foot faced the other’s head, limiting upright sitting for movies. However, we spent little time in the room, so it wasn’t a major issue.
The standout feature was the Yellow Leaf hammock on the balcony, perfect for reading or napping to ocean sounds—a unique Virgin amenity that elevated our experience.
Dining: A Culinary Adventure
Initially skeptical about the absence of a traditional buffet, we were won over by The Galley, a food hall with stations offering sushi Bento boxes, made-to-order burgers, salads, tacos, and more. Every dish was delicious and the setting refined. With over 20 included eateries, we savored Mexican at Pink Agave, Italian at Extra Virgin, and experimental dishes at The Test Kitchen.
The Pizza Place earned our vote for the best pizza at sea, while Lick Me Till Ice Cream became a twice-daily stop. Non-drinkers like us appreciated 24/7 Diet Coke access and daily almond croissants at The Grounds Club.

Wellness: Fun and Fitness
Motivated by indulgent dining or abundant time, we attended daily fitness classes, including Zumba, boy band dances, and a high heels class (in sneakers). The VHS 80s workout, with nostalgic music and enthusiastic instructors, was a crowd favorite—worthy of daily scheduling. Massages at Redemption Spa were rejuvenating, and we plan to explore the Thermal Suite’s Himalayan Salt Room and plunge pools next time.
Entertainment: Bold and Brilliant
Virgin’s entertainment exceeded expectations, outshining typical cruise shows. Highlights included a magician, comedian, a cappella group, mind reader, and the Cirque du Soleil-esque Duel Reality. The Diva, Scarlet Lady’s resident drag queen, stole the show with performances and a karaoke event, normalizing diversity in a meaningful way. Scarlet Night and the PJ Party filled the ship with music and red-themed festivities.
Activities: Endless Engagement
We participated in more activities than on any prior cruise, from crafting friendship bracelets (post our Taylor Swift concert efforts) to table shuffleboard, afternoon tea, vinyl listening at Voyage Vinyl, and private karaoke sessions. Squid Ink, the first tattoo parlor at sea, buzzed with guests seeking permanent keepsakes.
