Over two days, the 130-foot-wide, 115-foot-tall Kiruna Church is being transported on a hydraulic modular transporter along a carefully designed three-mile route. This relocation, starting August 19 at 8 AM local time, is a spectacle drawing global attention, livestreamed by LKAB and Swedish media like Aftonbladet.
Unlike other heritage buildings dismantled and rebuilt, the church moves intact, showcasing advanced engineering by Veidekke. Roads have been widened, viaducts removed, and infrastructure rerouted to ensure a smooth journey to its new home near the cemetery and emerging city center.
An Icon of Kiruna
Completed in 1912, Kiruna Church is one of Sweden’s most stunning pre-1950 structures and among the largest wooden buildings in the country. Designed by Gustaf Wickman, it blends Scandinavian Romanticism with Sami cultural influences and Norwegian stave church elements. Its red-painted wooden walls and ornate interior make it a beloved landmark and a top tourist attraction.
Notably, the church minimizes Christian symbols to welcome all visitors, a vision of inclusivity championed by Kiruna’s founder, Hjalmar Lundbohm. His grave will also be relocated to rest beside the church at its new site.
Why Kiruna Moves
Founded in 1890, Kiruna thrived due to its iron ore deposits and Arctic wind protection. However, the expansion of LKAB’s underground mine, the world’s largest, has caused ground subsidence, necessitating the relocation of homes, businesses, and landmarks like the church. This project redefines Kiruna while preserving its cultural heritage.
The Sami communities, whose reindeer herding routes are impacted by mining and urban growth, have raised concerns about regional development. Yet, the church’s move is seen as a “rebirth,” symbolizing resilience and adaptation.
A Cultural and Tourist Event
The relocation is more than an engineering feat; it’s a cultural celebration. Thousands of locals and tourists gather to watch the church’s slow journey, accompanied by concerts and community events. Once settled, the church will be restored and oriented to face the community, honoring Arctic Sweden’s folk church traditions.
