The Festa do Albariño began in 1953 as a friendly wager between winemakers Bernardino Quintanilla Álvarez and Ernesto Zarate. Their private dinner to crown the best Albariño sparked a public celebration. By 1965, Franco’s Minister of Tourism, Manuel Fraga, boosted its fame via Spanish television. In 1969, Fraga co-founded the Capítulo Serenísimo do Viño Albariño, adding prestige.
