Experience Unique Accommodation at Permit Room Lodging by Dishoom
Discover the Charm
Located above Dishoom’s iconic all-day cafe/bar, Permit Room Portobello, the new Permit Room Lodging offers a two-bedroom «lodging house» with its own private street entrance. Opened in June 2025, this exclusive private apartment comfortably sleeps four and features two en-suite bedrooms and a separate living room.
Inspired by Bombay’s Traditional Lodging Houses
This space draws inspiration from Bombay’s historic lodging houses, often run by Parsi proprietors. The aesthetic combines comfortable, nostalgic décor with a warm, inviting atmosphere, reminiscent of friendly, welcoming homes in Bombay.
A Personal Touch from Dishoom’s Founders
Co-Founders Shamil and Kavi Thakrar aimed to extend their hospitality and recreate the romantic, caring vibe of staying with friends and family in Bombay. They envisioned a boutique residence that reflects Bombay’s friendly spirit and generous hospitality.
Design That Tells a Story
Collaborating with Macaulay Sinclair, a renowned UK hospitality design studio, the team delved into Bombay’s rich history. Their research included visits to local lodging houses, vintage hotels, and private homes.
The lodge’s design is inspired by Kekee Manzil, a 1920s home of prominent Bombay art patrons. The interiors feature over 30 vintage pieces sourced from Bombay, bespoke beds, reclaimed parquet floors, and arched windows that flood the space with light.
Art and Culture
Decor includes contemporary South Asian art, curated by Rajiv Menon Contemporary. Bold works by Mustafa Mohsin, Maya Varadaraj, and Nibha Akireddy adorn both the lodge and dining areas.
